New Orleans, part of America’s Bible belt has always been synonymous with sultry weather, sickly sweet caffeine and black magic. A veritable melting pot of cultures: African, Indian, Cajun and Creole, New Orleans charms the discerning tourist.
Located close to the Gulf of Mexico its weather is hot, and wet throughout the year though the best time to visit is between February and April. September to December being off season is targeted by budget travelers.
The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, logs in most domestic carriers. Those traveling abroad are charged a departure tax of USD24.00. Greyhound buses and the Amtrak trains starting from the Union Passenger Terminal offer great connectivity.
Tourist spots here would be the French Quarter which harbors all the museums and historic monuments. The Garden District is home to the mansions and sprawling homes of the moneyed.
For the gastronomically inclined, eating is a serious matter in New Orleans and you have a zillion options to pick from.
New Orleans is the place to be in, if you seriously want to party. The raucous and irreverent Mardi Gras in February/March, sets the ball rolling followed by the annual Jazz festival in April/May. Some of the less chaotic and sober fests are the Black Heritage Festival in March, the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival, the French Quarter Festival in April, the Greek Festival in May and the Carnaval Latino in June. Fourth of July celebrations revolve around fun, food and fiesta at the Superdome followed by fireworks.
