The civil war’s association with Richmond is well known. As the capital of the Confederacy Richmond today has a lot to show for a prestigious lineage. The ambience of the old south is still retained through the many historic monuments, tree lined avenues, sprawling houses and southern cuisine. English is the predominant language spoken here though Spanish is a close second. There are atleast 400,000 native Americans speaking various dialects.
Weather wise Richmond is pretty mild but summer months between July and August can be overpoweringly hot and the best times to visit may be during spring between April and May and again during the autumnal months in September and October.
Richmond is well connected to other destinations in the US by the regularly plying Greyhound/Trailways buses and Amtrak trains.
Sightseeing here includes a visit to the Edgar Allan Poe Museum which is a treasure trove of artifacts related to Poe. This is a short distance away from the place where the master story teller conceived some of his darkest scripts. An in house store sells souvenirs pertaining to Poe and cannot be missed. The Hollywood Cemetery on Oregon Hill has no connection with movie land. It acquired its name from the rows of holly trees dotting the place. Two American presidents, One Confederate president and atleast 18000 Confeds are buried here. Maymont Park, was an erstwhile private estate but has now been converted into a public park with a zoo and gardens styled with the Japanese and Italian landscapes.
